My mechanic says my 2002 chevy prizm engine is in bad shape.

The #3 cylinder is probably not firing and the others are at different levels of pressure. the car burns up to a quart of oil on a 100 mile trip. it runs very rough and my mechanic thinks this problem will destoy the catalyitic converter. what can be done to fix this and how much might it cost?

Needs a complete rebuild motor or get a used motor at ther junk yard and replace it, i wouldnt rebuild it myself id just buy a good used motor , and you might be able to buy this for around 800 dollars , i think! and might be cheaper, !

The piston rings are worn out.oil is getting into the combustion chambers, and is being burnt along with the gas and air. yes it will ruin the catalytic converter. solution is to either re-ring the engine, replace crankshaft bearings, bore and hone the cylinders. or replace the entire engine with a remanufactured unit if you intend to keep the car. you didnt say how many miles are on this car. if its over, say, 150k, you might consider replacing the entire car. seriously.used motors are a gamble as they could be just as bad. complete eng replacement is best, with warranty.
