Repoed car

My car was repoed in may 2008 i wasnt behind in payments the collector got upset that i wasnt paying that day i told her that i was going to make pmt in a week and this would have been the first time that i actually went 15days past due she had my car picked up the next morning at 6am then refused to speak with me i requested a payment history of payments the payment history showes all my payments this is a simple inst loan so they were applying 10.00 15.00 0.15cents to my payments my monthly payment was 315.00 they havent sold my car but cant tell me when i was past due now i get a letter from dmv that they never reported it and my license is in danger i had 2 cars on the same ins policy and dmv says i can only send in a libility release form but the lien holder has to also send in proof of the repo so it wont effect my license although i have another unit registered in my name that is still insured by the same ins company i just dropped 1 car i live in california what can i do to get this all handled and do i need to seek out an attorney ?
