Saving Gas

Do any of you brains know how to simply and easily make a fuel injected V8 function as a V4? For instance can't a switch be thrown to stop the injection of fuel and spark to any number of cylinders to match the needed power output? Or perhaps there is also a way of simply reprograming the computer controls. Signifigant fuel savings on many presently operating petrol fueled engines would be a very very very major facter in reducing prices.

No throwing of switches or turning off fuel will help...Why? because the cylinders you have cut power to are still going through a compression stroke. When the valve close on the compression stroke the piston has to compress the air inside. It takes much force to do this. Cadillac experimented with a 4-6-8 engine where you would accelerate with the 8 cylinders and as you got to cruising speed the engine would go to 6 and then to 4 cylinders. How did they do this? by having a solenoid above each rocker arm that would hold the valve open eliminating the problem of lost power during the compression cycle. I'll make a comparison try to follow me here. When you try to pull start your lawnmower it is not that easy to pull because of the compression taking place. Now remove the spark plug and pull the cord. It spins over now very easily without effort. You know how bad an engine can run with just one missing cylinder not very good. Caddilac discontiued that engine design after a short time but I hear they are now working on something similar and we may see this idea back in use again..
