Spark occurs when points open, right?

In conventional battery-coil ingnition system, spark occurs when points open, right. This is usually few degrees before top dead center, isn't it?

Yes that is correct , just before the points make or break contact the spark will jump, if the points are burnt ( showing signs of ware ) have a bur on them from all the sparking they do , this could cause the gap to be off and the points to spark to soon , causeing a lose of power and poor starting , and weak spark at the wrong time to the plugs , some times you can file this bur / crustation off and reset / gap the points ( in a have to case ) , i suggest you replace the points if at all possible
