First check all the fuses at the fuse box preferably with a test light. I have seen fuses that appeared good visually and were blown. If fuses are good make sure there is enough fuel in the gas tank. Many times people call for assistance and the vehicle is simply out of fuel. This is happening more often now that fuel prices are higher and people are still buying their usual amount of gas.
Second make sure you engine oil level is visible on the stick. Many vehicles have a oil safety switch that will not allow the engine to start if there is little or no oil pressure. If everything shows good have someone listen by the gas tank for the hum of the electric fuel pump while the engine is cranked. The pump will run a few seconds after the key is released then stop running. This is normal.
If there is no sound at all then either the fuel pump could bad or it is not receiving voltage. Sometimes a few good firm raps on the bottom of the gas tank will jar the pump to work. Worn pump will sometime responds to this. If the truck does start then the fuel pump is bad and will have to be replaced.
If you have determined all the above is working then you will have to check the engine for spark.
If the engine has spark plug wires you can get a spark plug tester from a parts house. this is a light that will blink when held near the spark when the engine is cranked.
I don't recommend using the spark plug to ground method if you are a novice and not familiar with this procedure. There are some 50,000 volts that will shock you nicely if you do not know what you are doing.
If you have determined there is no spark then your vehicle will require an expert look at as there are no other easy checks that you can perform yourself at home.
