Synthetic Oil vs conventional oil

I got a case of mobil 1 synthetic oil from my brother in law. What are the advantages of this. If i use synthetic to i have to always use synthetic?

Supposed to be able to run colder engine , and not lose viscosity as fast , ive had evey machnic tell me , that once you start using synthetic oil , you cant go back , so i would not chance it , losing a engine , costs a lot
