Volvo engine abruptly went rough at idle and at higher rpm's

My Volvo engine 246000 miles abrupltly started to run rough and when I slowed down I found that the idel was very rough and starting out in drive is extremely rough. I checked the oil is was low one quart and the air filter was dirty and I tried to shake it out and replacd it while on the higway. Drove another 15 miles to get hjome check engine light was blinking but no messages to read. (2000 S80)
Any ideas of what it could be?
