We purcharsed a used car from a dealership in Reno nevada yesterday. we have found some major defects, is there a period of time that we can return

The car and not have to pay for it?

I think you have 3 days to reject the deal here in ky , and maybe there in nevada also , check you state lawsfor this , but iam sure theres a fedrael, law also , giving you a grace time alloted for you to rethink the deal , take it back as fast as you can
