What causes a Mercury Villager van speedometer to quit workig perodically?

Tha speedometer will quit working at random while driving. Also when going up a hill it will act like it is cutting out?

When a spedometer cable gets worn they will start turning inside and chic, causing the speedometer, to stop for a thought, replace the cable
