What could be the cause for my car heating up?

I drive a 1991 Mercedes Benz 190E. It has plenty of anti-freeze and it just got a tune-up. After 10 minutes of driving it, the temperature gauge will go up to the red zone past 120 degrees celsius. Then it starts making a strange sound which i think could be water boiling.

Sounds like the thermostat, is closed and bad , it will get hot and not open up , its on top of the water pump,
