What happens when a vehicle is repossessed and is not running?

I took my car to the shop to get fixed because check engine light would stay on well to make a long story short five months later its still in the shop and they say it would be 6000 dollars to fix it cause it needs a new engine what should I do take my chances and let it get repo because I can not afford it?
