What is leaving the scene of an accident?

My son crashed his car into a tree and left. A neighbor heard the crash and called the police. They want to talk to him. What should he have done and what should he do now?

He should have stayed with the car , and called the police, and let them work the wreck, but now he needs to go in and talk to the police, and tell them he was scared, he left since he didnt hit any one, and didnt want to get into trouble, doubt they will charge him with leaving the scene, because no one else was involued
