If your planing on keeping the car i would have everything checked in the tranie while they was in there and replace what they think it should have , maybe save you more expense down the line
I guess what I'm really wanting to know is what is the possibility this means I need a new transmission or could it be something a little less major?
Yes it could be some thing a little less major , like just a pump that needs to be replaced in the tranie and everything else is ok this would depend on how honest your repair shop is , after all
the shop is tring to make money , then again you are at their mercy since you have no way of knowing whats wrong with your tranie or what it needs , in my opinion 3 different shops would probably tell you 3 different things 3 with 3 different prices , but you would ahve to pay wrecker bills to have it towed around town , mmmm ! your stuck between the hard place and the rock
Good Luck

Rick, thanks for your help. What kind of pump? So I could at least act like I knew a little something. Women are at the mercy of mechanics more so than men and living in a small town that is famous for it's unscrupulous mechanics isn't much fun.

Hi Genus
I understand completely about unscrupulous mechanics taking advantage of women .
Most transmissions have a front and rear pump that pumps up the transmission presusure
to the valve body ,there may be debris collecting in the transmission valve body causeing one of these pumps to not work properly or the reverse ban could be worn or broke , there are so many things that can go wrong with and automatic transmission it's hard for me to say for sure exactly what it could be , as much as i hate to tell this , your really just at the mercy of the shop , I would just try to find someone that i felt like I could trust , ask a round with friends who they think would treat you fair , automatic transmissions are expensive to get repaired , call around and get and estimates, I wish i could be of more help to you but there are so many varibles when it comes to automatic transmissions.
I'm going to try attach a photo of a side view of a automatic transmission so you will see what one consite of and all the things that can mal-function , if it dont show up here the link for it >>

Good Luck Genus
