What is wrong with my car when there is a loud metal grinding sound coming from the engine while the car is idling.

There is a loud metal grinding sound coming from the engine. When I start the engine up I have to keep press on the gas so it won't shut off and the noise goes away. As soon as I take my foot off the gas thats when you can hear the loud metal grinding noise and the engine shuts off.

Check all your fluid levels first, if they are up, start by taking off your serpetine drive belt, and starting the car again. If the noise goes away, with engine off by hand check each one off the pulleys by turning and checking for play. If the noise is still there with belt off listen close to try to here which area it is coming from. A worn starter drive that does not dissengage fully will cause a loud grinding noise, but typically does not cause the engine to stall. Hope this helps to get you started.
