Which is the #1 Piston on a 1990 Mazda Miata 1.6 , Firing order?

I need to pull the head off to have a healycoil installed in one of the spark plug holes. the manual says to put the #1 piston to top dead center but it does not tell me which one is the #1 and I do not want to assume.

# 1 is in front closest to the radiator , having #1 up shouldn't be and issue if you dont turn the motor over with the head off and probably not even then if you dont have to take the distributor out to remove the head just be sure to mark which spark plug wire gos to the correct spark plug
personally i have put a lot of healycoil in spark plug holes and Never pulled the head, it's a fairly simple job for some one that has experience with healycoil , if your not experienced with this and it don't sound like you are , take it to the shop and save your self a lot of worry and time
putting in a healycoil is only a few minutes job pulling the head is intense and time consuming ,
its a prety hard job for a novice

I agree with Rick. This operation can be performed without removing the cylinder head. The repair is done from the outside anyway and not the inside. Check with your Mazda dealer or a good foreign car repair shop and don't do this repair yourself.
