Why is my 94 Mercury Villager overheating ?

As it overheats and the engine is making a loud clanking noise

Sounds like your about to throw a rod, with the clanking sound, engine over heating could it be your thremstat. check that, and if its working , it may be the coolant system , check water level , and ll hoses
