Why is my jag hard to start

After car has been sittin it takes 3 or 4 trys to start and smell heavy gas odor.car runs fine and will fire right up if i try to start right away after it has been runnin a while. its a 2000 jaguar s-type with a 4.0 v-8 and has about 115,000 miles
