Why would a car not idle?

I have a 1974 Mercedes 230 4 cylinder with a Stromberg 175 cdt carb in it and we are having trouble getting the car to idle with out acceleration. It seems to be lacking gas and we can't seem to find out why. It is an odd ball carburetor and it's hard to find any text about it, PLEASE HELP!
