On our 1999 Buick Century, the wiper on the driver side works, however the wiper on the passenger side is free wheeling. What are the common causes of this so that I can have an idea when I look at it?

The wiper transmission linkage (the rod that connects the wiper to the wiper motor) is either broken loose or the wiper arm is stripped (the arm fits over a fluted barrel that sometimes can strip or break)

Always make sure blades are not frozen to the windshield before turning them on in freezing weather. This is the major cause of broken wiper linkage.
