Attention New Yorkers - I got a cab question...

I was wondering what people with babies do when they take cabs? Aren't they required to in car seats? It seems that you wouldn't bring the base and the car seat with you to hook up in a cab? Are they allowed to just ride along on your lap in a cab?

Just curious

I can't speak for new yorkers, but when I worked for a cab company up north here - people would have to call ahead and request a cab w/ a car seat or ask if they could dispatch one to that area. I don't remember exactly how many carried car seats, but there were a few drivers with one in their trunk and they would get all calls for people with babies. I drove the airport shuttle for the cab company (a van instead of a car pretty much) and if they did not specify that I had to bring a car seat and they didn't have one for their baby (child under 4 actually) - we refused service.

Mom is right, the few times I had to take a cab with my kiddos I had to call ahead so they could send a cab with an apropriate car seat, and they always asked me "rear facing, front facing, or booster"

That's a good question - you got to imagine that in big cities especially NYC that some people take their kids in cabs...
