I've seen many mothers begin to add cereal to the just before night time feedings for babies who are large with quickly increasing appetites. My daughter wasn't a large baby but I do recall adding cereal to her feedings at about 4 - 4.5 mos. Just a little in the milk to create a bit more substance.

You can also discuss nutrition and feedings with the pediatrician with the baby's next visit. Some babies naturally need more than others earlier. Every baby is a bit different.

First, How old is baby? I would not recommend giving the baby water before feedings. The baby would not be getting enough nutrition this way. I also advise against giving cereal in formula. It may help with sleeping through the night but can cause digestive problems. Mixing with the milk is the wrong way to go. Ideally you should wait until baby is 6 months old before feeding any type of solid (including cereal), but if you feel you need to don't go any earlier than 4 months. Do not mix in bottle though, if you decide to introduce cereal make a couple tablespoons in a bowl with formula or water (side of box will explain) and feed with a spoon. Sucking cereal through the bottle can cause many problems later. It may not seem like a big deal to us, but to an 11lb baby it makes a difference.
Why are you considering this? Is baby "too" hungry at night? Formula cost too much? Depending on your reasons there may be other options than giving cereal too early.
Please though, do not give water before feedings. A baby does not need water until they are a year old - you can give sooner, but only AFTER feedings so that baby gets enough nutrition.

I agree that we need to know how old the baby is. If the baby is eating any solids you could put a teaspoon of olive oil in it's food to get more calories. I would recommend rice cereal if you are going to do cereal, but don't give it to him/her in a bottle.

Every baby is a bit differnt. My oldest was 9.5 when born and her doctor recomended a tablespoon of rice cereal a day when she was 6 weeks old, and she did well with it, while my youngest was 5.4 when born and he considered solids a huge "no no" for her until 6 months and he wanted her on formula until age 3. Occasiona sips of water are fine for any baby as long as it does not take the place of or interfere with the amount of formula or breast milk, so just before feeding is not a good idea and since water is highly digestable, I wouldn't worry about it creating an upset tummy. Before you add any solids to your babys diet, you should talk to your pediatrician.

I would definatly check with your doctor. I was told it's a chocking hazard in tiny babies, but everyone says something different!
