Being fair when not coming back from maternity leave

I am planning to not come back from maternity leave. I have worked for the company 8 years and have full paid 3 month leave. I am not coming back because of the 40% travel associated with my job. I want to be fair to the company though, and I would ideally like to give them a month notice. I would like to give them notice while I'm on maternity leave so I won't have to come back, but I want to make sure I am guaranteed my maternity leave. They use the disability first, then use my personal time, vacation, etc. owed to me. My anniversary date is the day I get back so I wouldn't owe them time and they wouldn't owe me time. Can you give me advice on this?

My recommendation is to use up your paid maternity leave without telling the company of your intention to quit. After you have used up your paid maternity leave, then tell the company you decided to stop working because of the demands and responsibility of caring for your new child.

You may believe right now you want to stop working, but something could change during the three month maternity leave period that causes you to reassess the situation. Your company will not think ill of you for the last minute notice. They will have been without you for three months already and still be there.

It might even be a relief for you to wait out the three months, go back to work and then give your company the customary 2 weeks notice. After three months of motherly anxiety and stress, two weeks at the workplace might turn out to be a nice vacation.
