Most babies will have colic, but its not genetic (that i know of). Colic tends to be more of just crying (sometimes caused by gas) and happens mostly in the afternoon/evening. It may be from over stimulation, or just being uncomftrable. A warm bath, swaddling, and lots of love will help, but don't feel bad if baby cries a lot. Sometimes they just need to cry. The reflux is usually more vomiting and upset tummy. If your baby spits up a lot after feeding (my hubby called it exorcist vomitting) and acts fussy after meals it is prob reflux. After feeding give mylecon every 2-3 hours. It doesn't get digested so it is safe to give young babies. Mylecon works best if you keep using it - don't wait for the baby to feel sick, it will take longer to work. Also, don't lay baby down for 20-30 min after feeding. If you keep them upright after feeding their body can start digesting and theywill keep their food donw better. Usually a baby w/ reflux will vomit if you lay them down after eating because their body hasn't started digestion yet.

I am sure colic is not genetic...and sometimes I wonder if it is really a medical term, because sometimes it seems they brand any child with colic who has uncontrollable crying spells. When my daughter was just 2 weeks old, she would vomit at least once a day, and empty her entire stomach. She cried often and had trouble sleeping. They were going to diagnose her with colic if she continued. Come to find out, she has moderately severe acid reflux, and a simple change of formula and prevacid help ALOT. Mylecon doesn't help my baby, she actually will vomit it right back up. You should really just talk to your pediatrician and voice your concerns. He/she may order a UGI or a 24-ph test to diagnose reflux. If there seems to be no medical cause for the irritability, your baby just might have "colic".

I'm not sure if colic is genetic or not but my youngest son had colic and reflux very badly and i spent so much money trying different thing to try and help. After trying soy formula (which seemed to work a bit, he still threw up everyone in a while but not half as much) I gave him the nestle goodstart formula and it worked so well! Not only is it much cheaper than the overrated formulas but it was much gentler. It might not staop the colic and refulx completely but if it works for you like it did for me you'll be thankful for less crying and spitting up! ;)
