How does a 7mnth old baby get yeast infections on the outside of the genitalia without being on breast milk?

I was just told by a hospital that my 7mnth old daughter has a external yeast infection ( I thought it was a diaper rash that wouldn't go away, due to teething). I was under the impression that infantile yeast infections were generally caused by the mothers breast milk. My daughter has not been breast fed for the past 5 mnths. The hospital suggested putting Canestan cream on her, but warned that too much applied can eat away her skin, I am concern about this. What other options do I have?

You are lucky because I have become an expert at yeast infections in infants. My baby is prone to ear infections and so when she goes on antibiotics, it kills the good bacteria that keeps the yeast at bay in her diaper. It's hard to fight and can be a pain to get rid of but if you stay consistent these tips will work!

The first thing that you should do is get a yeast treatment creme like monostat or vagisil to have on hand.

Once in the morning wash her bottom in the sink with her baby soap and get the area really clean, then let her hang out for about 10 or 15 min and play with her diaper off. It can be itchy so make sure she isnt scratching because those scratches can get infected.

Then before you put her diaper back on, put on about a pea-sized drop of the yeast-fighting creme then cover it with a TON of desitine original - balmex is too thin, I found that desitine is really the best stuff to get.

Repeat this again at night. I saw a difference in two days.

You can also fight it from the inside out! They make baby yogurt called yog-baby (I'd get the variety pack because my daughter HATED banana). Yogurt has live coultures that fight off yeast.

If THAT doesn't work, the dr can give you a anti-fungal or you can pick up an over-the-counter anti-fungal as well. I just asked the pharmacist and they can tell you a gentle and effective one.

Good luck - please let me know if that helps - I spent a month experimenting with different things and she was so miserable - until I figure out this formula that now works every time. Now I start it as soon as she goes on the antibiotic and this last time she had no rash at all!

Jodi is right on here. I want to mention something else to be careful of. Bubble bath! Bubble bath can give girls yeast infections (and other infections). Some soaps do this too. My cousin had them real bad since she was a toddler and the doctor didn't figure out that it was the bubble bath until she was 7!

Yeah - yet another reason for me to be thankfull that I have boys. ;-)
I don't know if it really works or not, so you may want to ask doctor, but she used to put a tea bag (down there) while soaking in tub to relieve itching - Unfortunatly she was also soaking in a bubble bath making it worse...

Thank you. Your answer is good and logical, since I've already tried a couple of your suggestions before posting my baby's problem. She eats yogart on a daily basis. The pharmacist gave us a mild cream mixed with a anti-fungal agent. But by description it will take a few days. I was also told to air dry her for about 10-15min/day during/after diaper changes before administering the ointment. Yeah, easier said than done though. Thank you for your input. I will definately give it a try, since she is already on a steady diet of yogart, maybe in combination with yeast creams, it will be a bit faster than pharmasist suggestions.

I have 3 kids, oldest is a boy and my youngest is of course our 7mnth old. Since my son was1 yr, I haven't let neither of my girls use bubble bath. My son ended up going into emergency when he turned one with an extremely infected penis. I mean it was swollen twice the size and close to a blue-black. Like he was bruised. He couldn't walk and it all took place within a hour of changing his diaper. We took him in and it took the emergency dr.'s 5 hrs to come see him. By the time the dr. came it was causing our son agonizing pain. He was screaming! The emergency dr. proceeded to tell me to brace his legs without informing me of what he was to do. The dr. then put my son's penis into his hand and he squeezed so hard, I felt the pain. A bunch of pus came out. My son was afraid of dr.'s for more than 2 yrs. His condition was caused by bubble bath, namely, "Mr.Bubbles". I would never recommend it for any child of any age.

That is scary. I don't use bubble bath with my kids (oldest don't like it so I just don't buy it) - good to know it can happen to boys too! I think my cousin's mom used Avon brand bubble bath, but not 100% sure on that.

You have to be very careful with little girls. Wet diapers, wiping them up to the vagina while cleaning them, just being too moist. You need to clean them from front to back. When you dont, you wipe the poo right into her vagina. That creates the problem. Also not allowing them to dry btween diaper changes. Use A&D ointment with zink (blue & white box) with each changing.

First of all, it can happen for many reasons, and it is actually very common. I think you should go to another doctor, becuase that is crazy what they tell you to do. I doctor should never tell you to put something on a baby that can cause that effect. Mydoctor wrote me a prescription and it was gone it 4 days, and instantly relieved discomfort for the baby.
