Not necessarily a sign of miscarriage. 11 years ago, I had my middle daughter of whom I had heavy bleeding for 3 weeks straight in my 2nd or 3rd month of pregnancy. not sure what the numbers were but they put me on bedrest. She is 11 years old now, will be 12 in October. They wanted me to get amniotic fluid drawn from my stomach when I was pregnant..... scary, detailed ultrasounds at Vanderbilt showed she was fine, no, I refused the amniotic fluid stuff. Well, when she was born, she had already had several bowel movements before she was born and at birth, the cord was around her neck 3 times. We found out in 2006 that she has crohn's disease. Other than that, even though I had heavy bleeding, for that long, she is fine and healthy today 11 years later.

Nothing is ever definite. A fetal heartbeat starts beating at about 8 weeks. In the beginning of your pregnancy it is not rare or unusual to bleed or spot as your body is used to its monthly cycle. Your cervix is closing up to support the pregnancy but is still able to bleed a little bit. Some people will actually have small periods the first couple months or so. If you have a miscarriage it will be much more than brown spotting. Brown is actually old blood, not new, which means it could have been from where you were bleeding or the last from your cerivx actually closing up. If you were to have a miscarriage, the blood would be bright red and thick clumps when you go to the bathroom. 'Typically' if you have a miscarriage you will bleed and cramp very badly for about 3 days. (feeling like you just gave birth in a way, just way smaller). You would know if it was that bad.

Though the dropping of an HCG can mean that you are having a miscarriage, it is not a definite. an ultrasound will give you an answer. also, cramping and heavy bleeding will be another indicator
