Full term is 38 weeks, so if you are having contractions, you should definatly call your doctor. Babies can survive outside the womb as young as 26 weeks, but that is very premature. At 31 weeks your baby will need assistance eating and breathing.
This is also the time where you will be feeling braxton-hicks contractions which are mild and don't get more intense with time. If you feel these and they are getting uncomfortable, go lay down and elevate your feet until they slow down.
If you have real contractions - trust me you will know.
