My 5week old baby hardly sleeps

He only sleeps for two hours at a time and only does that aout three times a day. Other than that he cat naps for only an hour or less. Is this normal to not sleep very much? Could it be something that I am eating that is making him uncomfortable and therefore unable to sleep for very long?I am nursing and have already cut out all dairy.

No, babies all have different sleep patterns. Some babies do well on their own schedule, if it makes you crazy and you are not getting enough sleep (which you need since you are nursing) you can try to impliment a schedule. Tracey Hoggs wrote a book called the Baby Whisperer which has some great techniques! I don't agree 100% with everything that she says, but there is tons of valuable information in there.

Her techniques for getting the baby to sleep longer intervals is fantastic. She'll help you keep the baby awake longer so they get a more predictable and longer nap pattern, but all babies are different! I've spent a lot of time in the last year on boards asking similar question because my eight-month-old STILL doesn't sleep though the night consistently. All babies are different! Good luck they sure are fun huh!

Since you are nursing, it is important to know whether or not your baby is getting enough to eat at each nursing. With my oldest I did not produce enough milk so I had to supplement some formula, with my youngest, to much lol. And really, a 5 week old is not going to sleep long without being hungry, and there body cloak is not set yet. The best advice I ever heard was sleep when baby does, good advice, but not always possible LOL Ask your pediatrician about how to determine your making enough milk, he/she may ask for a sample for testing for nutritional value also, and whether or not you should suplimenting. Good Luck, and enjoy this time while you can ;)

Yeah - if you are worried about getting enough milk, you can take him to the supermarket and weigh them on the fruit scales. I learned that from a co-worker and since I did that, I have seen others do it to, just never noticed before I guess.
