Radiation and Pregnancy

Hello,
I am an x-ray tech and I recently just found out I am pregnant. I was in some cases a few weeks ago with high dose fluoro radiation. I did not know at that time I was pregnant I did wear a lead body shield. Will this affect my unborn child? What should I do about my job? Is it safe to do my job and be in the fluoro as long as I shield my abdomen? Please advise.

This is a common question for female workers in your field. It's been found that you can conduct a fluoroscopic procedure as long as you are wearing a lead apron. You may also want to wear a personal radiation monitor on your belly to assure that the levels getting through are not harmful. Also remember that the reading will be higher than the actual radiation to the fetus as it will have to pass through many centimeters of tissue as well!

Congratulations!!

You have nothing to worry about! I am an x-ray student but I pretty much do everything a registered tech does. I spent the entire time of my pregnancy doing fluoro and surgical cases. As long as you wear a maternity lead apron you will be just fine! My daughter came out absolutely perfect! Make sure you always wear your TLD on your belly, as well as your regular one. Make sure also that your supervisor is aware of your pregnancy so he/she can order you that special TLD. If you are still worried, you could ask your supervisor about limited fluoro time, unless you are in special procedures, in that case, it never hurts to stand behind someone else with an apron on when possible! Congrats on the new baby :)
