In some cases they need to. Did the doctor give you a reason? Usually they don't do it without a good reason. My friend just had a baby induced 3 weeks early, but she was having troubles. She is really small and the baby got so big it tore open an old incision on her belly(from a surgury years ago). Typically they wait until you are past your due date to induce if the pregnancy has been normal. The only thing I can think of if everything is normal, is maybe they miscalculated your due date and don't want to tell you for whatever reason. I would definatly ask a lot of questions and get a second opinion. If you feel uncomfortable with your doctors decision, go to another doctor. Get a second opinion. Remember, this person is caring for you and your baby. If you are not 100% confident in what he/she is saying, find someone else. Even if another doctor wants to do it, maybe they can give you a reason.
If you do induce don't be too worried about baby. The due date is estimated at 40 weeks pregnant. A baby is considered full term at 37 weeks. So a couple weeks early should be fine.
