It's a natural occurring bacteria. Some people think it must be an STD but it isn't spread that way. It's not a hygiene issue really, just some women carry it and some do not. That is why they test for it now because it is asymptomatic for the carrier, but an infant is susceptible to it during delivery which is very serious if not treated.
