Soft spots exist because the bones in a baby's skull have not completely fused together where the soft spot is. Even though a mother can not feel the soft spot, it may still be there. Here is a more detailed explanation that discusses the soft spot and what it might mean if there is no soft spot: http://parenting.ivillage.com/baby/bhealth/0,,3q4n,00.html

All babies SHOULD be born with "soft spots" also known as fontanelles. This is where the bones of the skull have not fused together to allow the brain to grow. Some children however, have premature closure of the sutures in their skull, which is called craniosynostosis. This is a serious congenital defect, causing increased pressure on the brain. Surgery is normally used to correct it.
