You can get pregnant at any time during your cycle it's just that you are the most fertile during ovulation.

Actually you can only get pregnant when you ovulate, and that changes from month to month. There is a fertile period where you produce a cervical mucus, which gives the sperm a place to live until the egg drops. Sperm can live for up to a 5 days or so in this mucus. so you could have sex 5 days before you ovulate, and if you have "good mucus" you could get pregnant becuase the sperm would be waiting for the egg to drop. This period of mucus can change from month to month, as can your date of ovulation, so that is why you can't say there is a "safe" time of the month.
And I am sure you know by now anyway :)
