A soft pale blue shirt looks dynamite with purple. That's because purple is a secondary color made of red and blue. Using a primary color with the secondary color always works. Of course, you can also pair it with a red shirt (the other primary color in purple) , but that's an extreme statement, unless you are in a rock band etc.
It depends on the occasion. My second choice would be a black shirt with purple. Purple is the darkest of all the colors, and is interesting with black.
I would not use white. A white shirt is just too much of a classic business statement. A Purple tie says "bold, cutting edge, artistic," etc. White shirts say "hohum".
