I love the Herbal Essence deep cleaning line of shampoos. They have this tingly feeling and they get all the product buildup and oil out of your hair without drying it out. Then you can follow up with a light-weight conditioner to help lock in the moisture.
Here are a couple other "at-home" ideas:
1) you can add a few drops of dishwashing liquid to your shampoo to really cut out the oil. If you don't like the idea of diswashing liquid on your head, just look for shampoos that have a higher pH (more than 6.7) as oily hair needs a more alkaline shampoo.
2) Be sure that you are rinsing your hair for at least 60 seconds - if you have a problem with oily hair and had color-treated hair which can hold onto your shampoo more, be sure to spend a little extra time making sure you got it all.
3) Try only applying conditioner to the tips of your hair since the roots will get oil naturally.
4) Don't brush your hair too much. When you brush you are pulling oil from your scalp and distributing it to the rest of your hair and stimulating the scalpe to produce more oil.
5) Use an acidic rinse (natural of course) use diluted vinegar or lemon juice after shampooing. You can just add 2 Tbsp white vinegar or lemon juice to one cup of water. Put on hair and rinse with warm water.
6) If you find that after doing this your hair feels dry, instead of loading on heavy conditioners, try building up the protein in your hair by brushing 3 egg whites into your hair, letting it dry then rinse out for a real shine (not wax) that will last for at least 3 days.
Other home products you can wash your hair with to get rid or buildup and tame oily hair:
Vodka, cider vinegar, tea, beer and lemon juice.
