It depends on a few things.
The longer someone has been doing tattoos the more they will cost. Trust me this is one area you do not want to skimp on. My first tattoo was done by an apprentice and looks like a squished spider. I should have paid the extra $20, lol.
The size is the biggest part. If you are having a large piece done on your back, it may take more than one visit. They usually like to do the outline (black) first and the color second if it's a multi visit trip. If you are just doing a small tattoo that can be done in less than an hour, most places are between $50-$100. Larger tattoos are charged by the hour, at about $50-$200/hour.
The best tattoos places I've found I learned about from looking around (the pool/beach is a good place to hunt) for great tattoos that I see on other people. If you see a great tattoo with vibrant colors, ask them who they use.
Tattoo artists have to love that their work is like a 24/7 advertisement.
