Unless you live in a state that recognizes common law marriages, you must have a license in order for it to be recognized. Check your state laws. If you live in a common law state and move to a state that does not recognize common law marriages you will still be married because states in the United States recognize marriages from other states.

Currently, only Alabama, Colorado, Kansas, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Iowa, Montana, Oklahoma, and Texas; and the District of Columbia recognize common-law marriages contracted within their borders. Georgia, Idaho, Ohio, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania "grandfathered" common law marriage, permitting those established before a certain date to be recognized. New Hampshire recognizes common law marriage only for purposes of probate, and Utah recognizes common law marriages only if they have been validated by a court or administrative order.

There always seem to be unexpected legal issues down the road for people who go the "common law" marriage route. Get real. Having a marriage license issued by your local courthouse does not "involve" the government in your marriage. It merely generates a piece of paper that remains on file to prove you are actually married. What . . . you're too broke to even afford a few dollars for a marriage license?

If you dont have relogional prefrences you may wat to look into hand fasting. If you have ever seen Brave Heart it is the same ceremony that bruce did with his woman. It is a religious thing but there is no papers involved and not all states would recognize the marraige.

For your marriage to be legal and accepted you will need a marriage lisence. Otherwise you could do a faux cerimony of vows, but you will not be married.
