Is it ok to have both a matron of honor (my sister) and a maid of honor (my best friend) if i am only having 3 bridesmaids?

I was originally going to have a larger wedding party, but have since decided to keep it simple. I am only having my sister, my best friend, and my fiance's sister as bridesmaids. i would like my sister to be the matron of honor and my best friend to be the maid of honor (and i made the mistake of already asking her back when i still wanted a larger party), but my mother feels this would be unfair to the third bridesmaid, my fiance's sister. I don't want to offend my future sister in law, but on the other hand i don't want to 'demote' my best friend from maid of honor to bridesmaid.

This is fine. It is your wedding and you can choose whomever to be your attendant. Attendants should be those who are closest to you and who you want to share in your celebration.

Congratulations and good luck!

This is an exceptable practice. The "Matron" of honor is usually an older married woman, such as your mother, or your grandmother, but it is entirely up to you. Including your fiance's sister in your wedding party is not a hard and fast rule, and she will most likely be glad to be included no matter what the role.
