Who pays for the cancellation fees for a cancelled wedding?

Against my wishes, my ex-fiance called off the wedding. I gave him the money back for the ring since he bought the ring from one of my relative. I contacted all the vendors and cancelled the wedding since I was the one that paid for most of the vendors, and he put off contacting them himself. Now, the caterer and hotel is charging us a $6800 cancellation fee. Who should pay for this? What are my legal rights? I believe that he should since he called off the wedding. I have already lost so much since I put so much time, money, and effort into a wedding that he called off and didn't want to try to work out. Please advise. Thank you.

I would agree that he should pay, but this is something you should definatly file in small claims court. Try to get records of when you called vendors, everything you set up, receipts for other things that you have paid so the judge can see that you put most of the effort in during the planning and the cancellation. If you gave him money back for the ring, get him to sign something saying that as well if you can. Sorry to hear about that and good luck.
