Calibratio question

Hello,

I have a question about what items need to be calibrated. I work for a composites manufacturer that uses ultrasonic leak detectors to test for leaks in our molds before production begins. The units cost about $200.00 each. I have tried to get them calibrated but have been told by our normal lab that they can not calibrate them. Another lab gave us a quote of $495.00 to calibrate each unit. They are used to test the vacuum seal before the infusion process begins. Without the use of the detectors the finished parts will require more rework before they are acceptable to our customers. The detectors either work or they don't. If they do need calibrated could I make the calibration cycle be the expected life of the units so when they need to be calibrated it would be cost affective to replace them? They are now on an annual cycle. We have been buying new ones when calibrations are due. It does not make sense to stop using perfectly good tools just because calibrating them costs twice the amount of a new tool. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Rich L.
