You should talk to your Human Resources department to see what your options are. If you can cancel the leave of absence depending on their policies. It doesn't sound like he/she has your best interest at heart, but I don't know the conditions under which you took the leave, but it is your HR departments job to know the policies and help you - so please contact them.

I would talk to your HR department. See what they have to say.

It doesn't make sense that he would give you a mandatory 4 week leave of absence with your wife having surgery and not you.

Did he give you any reason for the leave? Like I said, every company has different policies and checking with whoever handles that will be the only way to know if it's legitimate or not. I can't imagine many people who can afford to take an unpaid leave of absence for 4 weeks and I see why you are upset! If you have violated some policy resulting in a leave, then he needs to tell you why. Here's what you should do:

1) Ask your boss why he is forcing this leave of absence. Unless you do that you won't know what to do next.

2) After you find out, go to your HR department or look in your company guidelines to see if there is a policy justifying the forced leave.

3) If you feel that the leave isn't justified within the terms of your employment agreement or if you feel you've been discriminated against or wrongly sent on leave you can file a complaint with EEOC. If they aren't the right people to talk to for your particular situation they can tell you who would be:

http://www.eeoc.gov/contact.html

I can only imagine how scary this can be - good luck and please let me know what you find out!
