Sorry to hear about your loss. Starting a Foundation takes a bit of paperwork but that's about it. Some of the requirements are going to be based on the State in which you reside. First step would be to contact the Secretary of State's office in your State and seee if they have guidelines specific to you location.
Is this going to be a national foundation or just local? That would determine some of the next steps.
First let me express my profound sympathies in the loss of your husband. It has been a little over eight months now for me and I can understand somewhat your pain.
My husband passed away suddenly June 28, 2008 just after our arrival at my daughter’s home in our home state. My husband and I had never discussed this issue at any time. Suddenly by that Saturday afternoon my daughter was overwhelmed with all kinds of calls…carried three cell phones..including mine. Several of the calls were about what or where to send memoriam. WOW! We were in such shock and had not thought of this issue at all. My son and family were at a wedding…son was best man. What a shock that day.
I will be at the University on April 25, 2009 to witnessed the first graduate student or receive this award.
My plans are establish a scholarship fund at the University we both graduated from with advanced degrees on this April trip. I have contacted the University and could have done this all over the phone but have chosen to meet the individual face to face to set this up. Setting up this scholarship is not a complicated situation at all.
This award is given to the first generation graduate student aspiring to be a school administrator. This student from rural roots has consistently demonstrated good character leadership traits of honesty, wisdom, fairness, vision, creativity, approachability, and academic and administrative competency. The Alvin M. Francis family established this award to honor the memory of Alvin M. Francis, a professional administrator, who believed that rank does not confer privilege or give power, but imposes an awesome responsibility.
