How does ebay make money?

Do they take a cut off everything that you sell? If you don't sell somthing do they still get the money?

EBay.com has changed their pricing structure many times over the years (and often times wall street was not sure if they could maintain or grow revenues.) Yes, they make money even if you don't sell anything and this is in the form of a listing fee. Also, i believe they make a small percentage on all items sold.

it's quite an intesting model -- in that they do not need to inventory anything at all, and they just facilitate the buying and selling of merchandise online. The more people they have selling things, the more money they make.

I love the business model, how can we take this to other industries and make it as (or if not) more successful?

I like the idea that a lot of sites are moving towards human lists and human ratings. Instead of just a 5 star system, they should allow users to makes lists of items (i.e. Elvis Mania list) that can contain the best content from an avid Elvis user. I think it gives another reason to visit and interact with the site, with minimal technological changes and people will really find unique things and get through the clutter resulting in more purchases. I think that is what this whold social shopping thing is about. Now there is SO much content, how can you help users weed through the crap making their experience more pleasant your yours more profitable... win win.
