Looking for some serious ideas

My wife and I live aboard (hence the name) our boat and have so for the past 2 years. We are best friends and are willing to try anything new together. We did the whole buying a house thing and after we fixed it up we became quite bored with the whole "land living" thing so we decided to try this lifestyle, which we love. Our problem being that since we bought the boat and have been up and down the east coast 3 times, we now just sit here in our slip. We have to work like everyone else in life so it keeps us confined to one area. (currently Maine). Does anyone have any good ideas that we can use to make a good living while we float around. I see that a couple of my fellow answerers have an education in web design. Perhaps something along a web site were we can go from marina to marina and do reviews. Any ideas?

There are so many options out there now that just did not exist before the internet found it's way into everyone's homes. I'm a web designer and one thing that I love is knowing that you can do it anywhere in the world that has an internet connection!

Within the whole web world, there's lots of things that you can learn. If you are design savy, then you can get photoshop and learn how to design. If you aren't great at design, but you are analytical, try being a developer or a programmer.

When I used to do freelance, I probably only met 1/4 of my clients face to face. Eveything else can be done via email, phone calls and video conferencing.

One thing that might encourage you is that no matter what your background is, computer books are amazing and you can teach yourself anything. Only a handful of my friends that work with computers actually went to school for it (I myself have a degree in psychology), so you can see it's something you can teach yourself WITHOUT going back to deans and exams.

I hope that helps - I have a friend who majored in art history who is a php programmer looking to move to Turks and Caocous and my cousin is a web designer that works in Puerto Rico :)

Good luck!

Very cool . . . it has been my dream to sell the house and do exactly what you have been doing for one full year, simply sailing around the world. No mortgage payments, no utilities, basically living on our own, just food and fuel and spending money in the various ports. obviously this is somehting i would have to save up for . . .

Since the whole bed and breakfast thing seems so popular, you might try that with your boat. All you need is a comfortable bed for your guests and good home-cooked (or boat-cooked) food for them to enjoy for a weekend. Yes, you could advertise your "boat and breakfast" on the Internet but that might not yield very good results. Only recommended if you can obtain a site and domain name for a very reasonable fee (10-15 dollars per year for the domain name and 3-7 dollars per month for site hosting). This way you could work and take people out on the weekends for a bit of rest and good food away from it all. The review thing won't earn you any money because there are literally millions of reviews of anything you can imagine on the Internet for free. As for me . . . I'd spring for a weekend getaway on a boat with some good food, wine and company.
