My boss sets unreasonable deadlines then blows up when they are not met!

My Boss has been a salesma all of his working life, granted he is a very good salesman but has absolutely no idea of what it takes to get the job done, he promises the clients they will get their orders by the end of the day or the next day when I am already swamped with previous orders. he doesn't let me or my assistant who are the production staff set the production schedule, & if we make the schedule he dumps other projects in the middle of it with no hope of accomplishment.
My boss has previously sold Insurance & frozen food, then he opened this sign shop.
I have been a graphic designer in the sign industry for 20 years, and have woked at many sign shops, I would like to make this work but I am totally frustrated and dread going to work and am totally worn out mentally & physically by the time I go home!
Also when he hired me he said he would give me a dollar an hour raise after 60 days when i brought it up to him he said it was 90 days, then after 210 days he gave me a performance review and not a raise but said he would give me 10 percent commission for all orders I bring in,quarterly, it is now june 4th he told me the commission thing in december no commission checks at all, and when i checked the sales reports most of the clients i brought in show him as the salesman!
just an FYI we have had the shop open for 11 months and have had 170 thousand dollars in paid invoices! thats not counting work in progress!

Please help

My Boss has been a salesman all of his working life, granted he is a very good salesman but has absolutely no idea of what it takes to get the job done, he promises the clients they will get their orders by the end of the day or the next day when I am already swamped with previous orders.(normally at any other sign shop it would be 5-7 days!) he doesn't let me or my assistant who are the production staff set the production schedule, & if we make the schedule he dumps other projects in the middle of it with no hope of accomplishment.

Also when he hired me he said he would give me a dollar an hour raise after a 60 day probation period. when i brought it up to him he said it was 90 days, then after 210 days he gave me a performance review (probation period has nothing to do with a performance review)and not a raise but said he would give me 10 percent commission for all orders I bring in,quarterly, it is now june 5th! He told me the commission thing in december . No commission checks at all, Two quarters later! and when i checked the sales reports most of the clients I brought in show him as the salesman!

Why does this happen so much in the design industry? I'm a digital designer developer and have worked for many small companies where the owner was good at something else, got money and decided to open up a design studio because he thought he could make more money, not because he was good at it.

Common things that happen when this happens.

1. Owner/Boss sets unreasonable deadlines because the job looks effortless even though that is far from the truth. Chances are your boss thinks your job is easy. He's probably so delusional that he thinks he could do your job if he had too.

2. Owner/Boss promises clients products and services that the company doesn't sell or have. I've seen this happen several times

3. Owner/Boss gets irate when his impossble deadlines and ideas are not accomplished.

There are several avenues to take here. First off you need to tell him you are very unhappy and that if these problems don't get fixed you will need to find other work. Stress causes all sorts of health problems including high bloodpressure. Secondly try to come to a compromise. You sound like you are a hard worker, find a realistic goal you all can achieve. If he wants more work coming out in a faster time then he needs to hire a team of people under you, to help out.

If he is unable to listen or compromis start looking for a new job, I'm sure there are plenty of sign shops that would love a talented worker who works hard, such as yourself.

Hookah753 you sound like a hard worker. Time to put yourself first. Your boss isn't going to change; no matter how much you give, he's always going to push you harder. You'll never get over the hurdle, never get enough of the workload done, never be appreciated for your efforts.

A lot of graphic designers get stuck working in toxic sweat shop environments, so know that your situation is one that happens to many of us. Don't wait for things to get better, they never will.

The thing about working with a salesman - pay attention to what they do, not what they say. Since he's broken so many promises, understand that he doesn't respect you and it's time to leave. Put in your notice. If you need the income, then spend an hour every day looking for a better job. Good luck.
