Can I get a 1 hr. rating with 2 layers of 5/8 drywall on one side?

There is no way to get drywall on the backside of the wall and it calls for a 1 hr rating. I was thinking 1" shaft liner is 1 hr. so why wouldn't 2 layers of 5/8 be?

thanks

You are right 2 layers of 5/8 drywall will give you a one hr fire rating if you can't get to it from be hind. ive had that come up several times over the years. called the inspectors and thats what they recommended.

One layer of taped, 5/8" drywall gives you a one-hour rating on the wall or in the room or space it is installed in, as does one layer of taped 1/2" type x drywall. If the space is inaccessable, placing two layers on the outside wall would not give a one-hour rating to the inaccessable space. Check with your inspector before wasting your time and money putting up a double layer on the outside wall.
