Colums for a pole barn.

I want to build a pole barn. Main framing out of wood & siding metal. For the main posts the accepted practice seems to be placing the pole directly in the ground on top of a bag of cement pored in & then tampted w/dirt. Of course using treated lumber. Becouse the pole is in direct contact with dirt it must be at least .60 treated. At 22ft, Laminated 2x8x22x5 makes these very $$$$$. My idea is this. I want to sleeve the circumference of the 1st. foot with 3/8in. plate steel, then weld a plate to the bottom and bolt it to a concrete 18in. 4ft deep piller. Like a steel building. This would let me use hemfir instead treated . No wood would ever be in dirt.
