You do not need to determine what type of copper wire it is.But the price being paid
for copper, at a scrap yard is very high right now. Let me tell you something about selling
copper. I am an Electrical Contractor, I save, and then sell the scrap wire from my jobs.
You will get a lot more for what they call shiny copper. So you will need to strip the
outside coating off the wire. Some people burn it off, But then it is no longer shiny
copper. So I use a razor knife. It's not that easy to strip. But use a sharp knife, tie one
end of the wire to something, pull the wire out straight. Then take your knife and try to
slice all the way along the wire then you can peal the coating off. Be very careful not
to cut your self.
Also if you do not have the permission to take this wire, you could be arrested. Here in
California, some guys took a lot of copper wire from the light poles on the freeway.
They took it right out of the pipe. Some other guys went to a job sight and attempted
to pull out some large copper wire out of some pipe that went from one electrical
panel to another. Well it turned out it was live their was 480 volts running through
the wire, when one guy tried to disconnect it he was electrocuted. So make sure you know
what you are doing.
