Do you know the amp hr range of your batt and are we talking a bout a car /truck or another type of batt and usage batteries can be overloaded and have internal defects and get hot and smoke and explode so be careful

For a 12 volt car batt the charging voltage is 13.8 to 14.2 volts dc voltages over that are over charging the batt the fault would be the altenator voltage regulator and can cause damage to other components ==go to auto zone and let them check the batt and charging circuit they will do it for free
