You can do the following to join wood together:

1. Glue and clamp the boards together.
2. Drill pocket hole screws and screw the boards together. You can read more about pocket holes and the jig to make them from the following website:

3. Use a biscuit joiner to cut a slot on the edge of the boards, use glue and biscuits to insert in the slots. Clamp them together till the glue dries.

One of the best ways to join wood together for example you are making cabinets or wide shelves. the boards are joined together with a thin oval shaped piece of wood called a biscuit. you cut 2 slices in each piece of wood insert and glue a biscuit in and this ensures it will not seperate and keeps two pieces of wood evenly together.
