I had work done on my home a short time ago. I paid 1/2 up front and 1/2 when the work was complete. There are too many rip off's out there, and you read about how they work real hard until they get the rest of the money, then you never see them again.

If I were you, I would do half now, half when the work is complete and get EVERYTHING in writing, pay by check or money order so you have proof, and get a receipt for your payment. If this is not acceptable, the look for another contractor!

Truthfully, being a former contractor I would recommend locating a company that is not only financially solvent but also has a track record and valid testimonials from former clients. It is a fair assumption to pay 1/3 to 1/2 up front to help cover material costs and some operating costs. But definitely avoid any contractor that wants all the funds "up front". That usually means he needs the money to finish a prior job and and the completion of yours will usually fall behind. Good Luck
